To be honest i never really liked tofu but i had leftover miso paste and thought why not! The secret is to press the tofu for several hours under heavy weight (books) until it releases most of its water. This will allow it to really crisp up.

Crispy miso bbq tofu. To be honest i never really liked tofu but i had leftover miso paste and thought why not! The secret is to press the tofu for several hours under heavy weight (books) until it releases most of its water. This will allow it to really crisp up.

Ingredients

  • 500 gr medium firm tofu
  • 1-2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1-2 tbsp avocado oil
  • 1 tbsp miso paste (or soy sauce)
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp water
  • Sesame seeds, toasted, optional
  • Parsley or coriander leaves, optional
  • Chili oil, or sriracha, optional

Method

  • 1)

    Press the tofu in between 2 kitchen towels and under several books to release as much water as possible.

  • 2)

    Tear into small bite-sized pieces and place into a medium bowl.

  • 3)

    Add the cornstarch and salt.

  • 4)

    Shake to coat the pieces well.

  • 5)

    Shallow fry in hot oil, pressing while cooking, until crispy.

  • 6)

    Remove from the pan and keep warm.

  • 7)

    In the same pan, add the rest if the ingredients and whisk.

  • 8)

    Simmer until thickened.

  • 9)

    Add the tofu and toss to combine.

  • 10)

    Transfer to your serving dish. Sprinkle with the sesame seeds and herbs.
