Rocky Hills of Mount Pindus- or the Spine of Greece

After a bumpy ride that tested our nerves and our patience, we drove up the rocky hills of mount Pindus- or the spine of Greece, a mountain range located in Northern Greece and Southern Albania- all the way to the top at 2000m above sea level. The ride to the top took around 4 hours. And although the roads felt treacherous, there was a peace that we could feel in the fertile green land, the vibrant crisp blue sky and the silence that surrounded us. Around 2000 lamb from the Kalaritiko breed are indigenous to the area and they have been scientifically proven to have lower cholesterol levels and a nutritional value superior to the regular lamb that is issued from intensive farming. This breed, thanks to extensive farming, is bred in it’s natural habitat on the gentle slops of Mount Pindus, creating an exceptional meat directly from farm to table.
Younger generations are moving to the cities, leaving the tough “circumstances” of the mountains to an easier lifestyle in the city. Climate change is also unfortunately affecting sheep breeding. It is slowly becoming rarer.
This will not only threaten farming but also the fauna and flora of this region that are the true wealth of these mountains. @meettheeulamb
